POTATO GRATIN
Ingredients:
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 1 cup milk
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme (optional)
- 1 1/2 cups grated cheese (such as Gruyère, Cheddar, or Parmesan)
- Butter for greasing the baking dish
Instructions:
1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a baking dish with butter.
2. Peel the potatoes and slice them into thin rounds, about 1/8 inch thick. You can use a mandoline slicer or a sharp knife.
3. In a saucepan, combine the heavy cream, milk, minced garlic, salt, black pepper, and dried thyme (if using). Heat the mixture over medium heat until it starts to simmer. Remove from heat.
4. Arrange a layer of sliced potatoes in the greased baking dish, slightly overlapping them. Pour a portion of the cream mixture over the potatoes, just enough to cover them. Sprinkle a layer of grated cheese over the cream.
5. Repeat the layering process with the remaining potatoes, cream mixture, and cheese until all the ingredients are used. Make sure to finish with a layer of cheese on top.
6. Cover the baking dish with foil and place it in the preheated oven. Bake for about 40 minutes.
7. After 40 minutes, remove the foil and continue baking for another 20-30 minutes or until the top is golden brown, and the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.
8. Once the gratin is done, remove it from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes before serving. This will allow the sauce to thicken slightly.
9. Serve the potato gratin as a side dish with roasted meats, grilled chicken, or enjoy it on its own.
Feel free to customize the recipe by adding other ingredients such as caramelized onions, herbs, or bacon to enhance the flavor. Enjoy your potato gratin!
